Heart Check | Motives

Welcome to my blog once again.

So on my way back from work yesterday, I was reflecting on certain things whilst speaking in tongues, and I found myself asking God to change my heart and uproot things in my life that He didn’t plant. As I continued, scenarios of things I’ve done and said replayed in my head and I knew exactly what the Holy Spirit was saying, He was talking about my motives.

What is MOTIVE?

According to Merriam Websters dictionary, this is something (such as a need or desire) that causes a person to act.

Why do I do what I do? Am I doing things for the right reasons or for the wrong reasons? Do I own a blog because I want to glorify God with it or I just want the fame and goodies that comes with being a blogger? Do I stay late at work because I want my boss to notice me and give me some accolades 😏 or I just want to do what is right?

Sometimes is not about what you do, but why you do it.

It’s scary to be caught in the trap of being used to the accolades of men, if you’re not careful, you may be unaware that you’re off track. That’s why a heart check is necessary every now and then.

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life- Proverbs 4:23 NLT

I started to ask God for forgiveness, because I don’t want to be the one the Father cannot trust because my motives ain’t right. It’s important that our heartitude (totally came up with that word 😏) towards God, people, work, relationships etc. is right. Let’s examine a few scenarios, and think about how this applies to you.

Why do I serve God?

Do I serve God because I love Him or because I only care about what He can do for me. Do I serve at my local church to be “seen” or I serve because I truly love God and want to advance the kingdom.

Why do I want a relationship?

Do I want that relationship because I’m lonely and bored and I need someone to pay my bills? Do I want a relationship for the right reasons?

Why do I help people?

Do I visit Orphans because I want to obey Gods word and because I have real empathy or I do it because I want everyone on social media to know I’m such a good person.

Why do you post on social media?

Do I post on social media to put people under pressure ? #pepperthemgang, who exactly are you peppering please? 😂 It better be the devil 😂

I’m not saying anything is wrong with the phrase lol. I’ve been guilty of using it, but what exactly is our motive for saying that?

As much as we’re the light of the world, our blessings should lead people to God and not further push them away. However, we will still have some bad belle people (haters), and there’s not much you can do about that.

This is a call for us to always weigh our motives. It’s easy to get caught up, but a heart check is always important. For everything you do today and everyday, ask yourself the WHY.

Let your motives be guided by this:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. – Philippians 4:8
