How to Spend time with God

Spending time with God as a Christian cannot be negotiated. To know God intimately, we have to spend quality time with Him everyday. Going to church on Sunday’s, or attending midweek services can never be enough if you truly want to experience Jesus on a more personal level. I’m not an expert on this yet, but when I wanted to be intentional about my walk with God, I listened to messages by Joyce Meyer, and I read articles from Heather Lindsey’s blog. And it did help me a great deal.

Spending time with God could be the highlight of your day if your heart is truly in it. I just want to say that you don’t have to religious about it, you just have to know what works for you. I would share how I go about my daily devotions soon.

 A conducive environment where you would not be easily distracted, preferably being alone so you could focus, is very important. To spend time with God you would need;

Good Music

I cannot begin to explain how music has helped me in spending time with God. Good music truly makes the whole difference. There are days I wake up and I’m really not in the mood, but this is the life I have chosen and I cannot afford to live outside of Christ. I just go on my laptop or phone and play me some good music. Music just sets the mood and before I know it, I’m there for hours and not wanting to stop. Worship and praise is really important because it ensures you’re going into God’s presence with thanksgiving in your heart. There are too many amazing gospel music out there, know what type of songs gets you going and go for them. I know y’all already know I listen to Bethel music, Hillsong, Kari Jobe, Kim walker, but that’s not all. I listen to Frank Edwards, David G, Nathaniel Bassey, Sinach etc. There were some periods in my life I listened to just one song, because those songs spoke directly to my situation. Like I did Nuefy’s Isogbolamo. This is no advert but y’all need to download that song. I’m still not over it.

Bible

Spending time with God is not a one way conversation, God speaks and one of the ways he speaks is through his word. I use message translation most times because the language is modern and it is really easy for me to understand. I use new king James too. Both versions are sweet. How I study the bible depends mostly what my devotional gives me. Days that I don’t use my devotional, I study randomly. Other times I study passages speak to my present situation. Listening to messages is also something I love to do. Works for me. The people I listen to are Pastor Wole Soetan, Bishop David Oyedepo, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, Apostle Joshua Selman, Heather Lindsey, Joyce Meyer, Bishop Abioye, pastor Kingsley, Joseph prince, Joel Osteen.

I’m  currently on Pastor Sam Adeyemi’s case, listening to messages on character, which I admonish each and everyone of you reading this post to get, and I assure you your lives will not  remain the same.

A Journal

Late last year, I started this habit of writing letters to God, it’s really amazing knowing God reads these letters even before I put them down. This is where I just pour out the deepest thoughts of my heart to him. I joined in the journal challenge movement by Heather Lindsey, where you write to God every day. The purpose was to ensure that you’re spending quality time with God on a daily basis. I have missed some days, but I cannot begin to explain the changes this brought to my life. It makes spending time with God fun. Some days when I’m really tired, I just pick up my journal and write to Him about everything and anything. You should try it! You could also document the revelations you had and the things he puts in your heart while you sat at his feet.

Your Heart

If your heart is not in what you’re doing, then I’m afraid you’re wasting your time. It’s really important that as believers, our hearts are connected when we’re with the one we love. I remember when my pastors wife asked me a question, while giving an illustration about how I’d feel if a guy were asking me out, and then he wasn’t giving me attention, or worse we’re together but it’s as if he’s s not there. You get the picture? Our relationship with God is truly a relationship. It’s not just a thing. So when you’re sitting before your father, ensure that you’re focused on him alone.

I don’t think there is any particular way to go about this, just know what works for you and keep driving it! Know what time of the day best fits your schedule. The important thing is ensure that you’re going to him with a heart of gratitude. If you feel the need to cry, cry all you want, if you want to be quiet before him and hear him minister to, you why not. Just make sure you’re spending quality time with God. Now I’m not going to give a time frame to this because quality is not measured by how much time you spend, but how well. The place of the Holy Spirit cannot be ignored because He’s the one that helps us and puts the hunger for God in us, he helps us pray. Without His help, we can’t function properly.

I think it’s imperative that I say that shouldn’t put God in a box by thinking spending time with Him only revolves around the ‘time’ you spend with Him. He wants to spend time with you every time, he wants to hear from you every time. In your words, in your conversations, do you ignore his presence? Now that’s a post for another day.

Stay blessed ❤

So proud of you girl… 👍
Honestly baby, am glad to see some giant leaps and depths in your walk with God, it just shines through your article…😉😊

I felt like I was reading one of Joyce Meyer’s article or even hearing her very message via your words on “How to spend time with God” (no kidding though…😉😀).

I have nothing left to say, but to encourge all who read this that, you can begin with baby steps and just sing, laugh and enjoy God’s presence.
He will be there to walk you through as you grow.
    “Consistency” is the trick.

    Thanks for sharing Fisayo…😀
    God bless you… 😘
